| Teach the standards-based instruction tasks to help all students learn the expected standards, content, skills, or processes. |
Teaching is a process for helping students to learn something. Standards-based instruction tasks are used during instruction to teach students the basic skills, content knowledge, and thinking processes that are needed for success in school, higher education, and the workplace. In standards-based instruction students are expected to "do, perform, or construct" something in the instructional setting that reflects learning standards.
This is the critical characteristic of standards-based instruction because the expected student performances taught during instruction will be expected of each student during a standards-based assessment task. Hence, if the learning standard calls for problem solving, instruction must provide opportunities for each student to learn how to problem solve and to practice problem solving in a variety of contexts because the assessment will require the same performances in similar contexts.
The implication of this process for teachers involves delivering ongoing standards-based instruction tasks that include a variety of learning activities that reflect learning standards and the classroom, district, or state assessments that will be administered to verify learning. Only through this approach will instruction mirror, match, or align with the learning standards and assessment. In turn, assessment should mirror instruction.
Teachers must provide the daily authentic learning activities to students in the form of standards-based instruction tasks so students are ready to demonstrate what they have learned in standards-based assessment tasks. This is why students who are taught by teachers who integrate standards-based instruction tasks into daily learning activities are more likely to be successful on state assessments that are given in a standards-based-based format.
